Coffee Beans

Green coffee beans are graded according to certain criteria, such as shape, size, uniformity of the beans, color, horniness, husk, cut, gloss, smoothness of the beans, proportion of defective beans, foreign matter and odor.

The largest coffee producer is Brazil, responsible for about a third of all coffee, a position the country has held for the past 150 years.

The coffee beetle (Araecerus fasciculatus) is a typical storage pest, which easily spreads during the relatively long periods of storage; Infested coffee beans show circular holes. Coffee may also be infested with the warehouse beetle (Trogoderma variabile), cockroaches, rats and mice.

Fumigation is generally carried out in the countries of origin. Fumigation chemicals are often incorrectly applied to the product and residues with a carbide-like odor are left on the sacking, which may taint the coffee.
