Identification: An adult fruit fly is 0.3 to 0.4 cm long, depending on the species. In most species, the eyes are bright red, the abdomen shows brown transverse stripes.
Life cycle: A female lays 400-900 eggs in fermenting or decaying material. The development from eggs to adult takes 8-10 days. The eggs and larvae have protrusions or breathing tubes.
Commodities infested: Fresh fruit is not affected by these bugs, but fruit and vegetable products will be contaminated. Fruit flies are found in the food industry, breweries, fruit shops, kitchens and cafes.
