Mites (Astigmata)

Identification: Mites are light in color and about 0.04 cm long, with hairs on their body and legs.

Life cycle: The development from egg to imago is dependent on the temperature and can vary from 17 to 140 days. The preferred temperature is 25 º C with a high relative humidity up to 100%.

Commodities infested: Mites are found on all kinds of plant products and sometimes also products of animal origin. The quality and/or value of the stock of products decreases because of the pollution caused by the mites. The presence of mites can be proved by wiping a little flour together and smoothing it. If the surface becomes rough after a while, this shows the presence of mites.

Preventive measures include: keep storage stocks cool and dry, ensure good ventilation and keep storage areas clean and dry.
